| WHEN TO START BIRTH CONTROL PILLS |
|
My doctor prescribed a birth control pill (Cyclessa) exactly one week ago. He told me it was ok to start it that same day on the quickstart method since there was no chance at all I could be pregnant. My period came today on its naturally scheduled time. I am confused, and unable to contact my doctor. My question is - Should I continue to take the BC pills normally until the placebo pills? Should I skip the placebo pills when I get to them? or should I throw away the old pack of birth control pills and start the new one today on the first day of my period? For how long should I use a backup method?

| Please stop taking this pack of BC pills. Start a new pack next Sunday or a Wednesday.
The newer pills are said to give you adequate protection from 7 days after starting them and so you need to use a backup method like a condom for only the first 7 days. But I believe that it would be a wiser to use a backup method for the whole first month of using the BC pills. |

| A condom is the best backup method. You cannot use other hormonal contraceptives like the Nuvaring since this would mean a doubling of hormones (pills plus nuvaring). IUD is not a method which should be used for only one month. Other methods like vaginal sponges, diaphragms etc. are not as effective as condoms. |
