VAGINAL ODOR Dear Dr, I am a 65 years old female. I have been noticing an odor from my vagina in the last 6 months. This was slight at first but has been getting worse. I wondering if it's my diet, thanks Janice K, Age: 65, LA REPLY Janice, What type of odor do you have - fishy, like eggs, foul smelling? Is the odor constant or is it more at some time - after sex for example? Do you have any vaginal bleeding or spotting? Any vaginal itching? What creams or other medicines have you used so far? FOLLOW-UP QUESTION The smell is somewhat foul-smelling but not all the time. Sometimes, it is more of a musty smell. I do have vaginal discharge from time to time and it itches when the discharge comes out. There is no vaginal bleeding but sometimes i have seen brown spots in the discharge. I am not sure if they are blood, though. I have been using a cream called Canestan - I think it is antifungal. The vaginal itching goes away somewhat for a few days when I use it but then returns. REPLY Janice, Vaginal odor at your age can be due to two causes: 1.You have a condition known as postmenopausal vaginitis. This is a non specific infection of the vagina which occurs due to a low estrogen level in the blood. The low estrogen level causes thinning of the vaginal mucosa which then becomes prone to develop infections, even by organisms which are otherwise harmless. You will need to consult your Obgyn for a vaginal swab test. Treatment is generally with anti-inflammatory medicines and an estrogen cream for about 2 -3 months. An infected tumor of the cervix or the uterus could be a potentially serious condition and needs early examination. Please consult your Obgyn as early as possible for a proper evaluation and tests.
