SPOTTING AFTER PERIODS

I am 28 years old. I have been on birth control pills for 2 years. Last week, my period was 4 days late but finally came on Saturday night and ended on Wednesday but since then, I''ve had light spotting of thick brown consistency and just now (Saturday night), I went to the bathroom and when i wiped, there was bright red blood. i am very worried. I have a history of HPV and PCOS as well.

Alaine,

I assume your pregnancy test is negative.

What birth control method are you on? Which brand of OCP pills? Have you been using the same brand the last two years or have you changed it recently?

When did you take the last pill before the period? Have you started a new pack now? Are you sure you have been taking the pills regularly?

FOLLOW-UP

I did just switch pill brands from Loestrin to Yaz. And yes, the pregnancy test was negative and I started the new pack 6 days ago.

Loestrin contains an estrogen called ethinyl estradiol and a progesterone called progestin. Yaz contains the drugs drosperinone (3mg), which is a progesterone and ethinyl estradiol(20 microgram).

Normally, switching brands should not cause any problems. But in some women there may be some amount of hormonal imbalance in the first 1 - 3 months. In your case, it could be due to the PCOS which can cause hormonal imbalance by itself.

But your irregular bleeding or spotting can also be due to changes in the cervix as a result of the HPV infection.

While spotting or bleeding due to the hormonal imbalance usually settles down in about 3 - 6 months, that due to cervical changes needs to be investigated. It will be better for you to get an examination and a pap smear by your gynecologist.

I hope this helps.
