WHEN SHOULD I HAVE SEXUAL INERCOURSE DURING LH SURGE DETECTED ON OVULATION TRACKING?

Hello Doctor,

I got a positive LH surge on an ovulation tracker on Monday, I had sexual intercourse that day but I didn't the following day as my husband worked all night. I'm planning on having it again tonight. Did not having sexual intercourse on Tuesday decrease my chances of conceiving?

Sarah Hamilton, Age: 26,

Sarah,

Sexual intercourse needs to be carried out every 48 hours during the period of ovulation for the best chance of conception. The LH surge occurs about 24 hours before ovulation. The male sperm can fertilize the ovum for 72 hours after being ejaculated into the vagina. It takes about 48 hours for the sperm count to come back to normal after one episode of sexual intercourse. Having sex more oftener than 48 hours can actually decrease the sperm count to some extent.

Ideally, when a couple is trying to conceive, they should have sexual intercourse every 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th and 18th of the menstrual cycle. Since the LH surge and ovulation generally occurs at around the 14th - 16th days, this increases the chances of pregnancy.

So your timing is just right. Not having sex on Tuesday and having it today will give you a better chance of getting pregnant.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to ask a follow-up question if you wish to know more.
