VAGINAL ODOR WHILE ON THE NUVARING

Hello Dr. Mazumdar,

I have been noticing this rather odd odor in and around my vagina for some time now and it has gotten to the point that I'm wondering if it is normal...I don't think it is a yeast infection (because i have had one before and I don't itch) and i haven't noticed an cottage cheese like vaginal discharge (although the discharge that is currently present has a very strong odor and causes the inside of my panties to turn a shade of light brown) I can't get to a doctor at the moment. The weather here is very hot and humid and I find it smells even worse due to the fact that I'm always perspiring. I shower quite often, but i find no matter what i do, after 3-4 hours out of the shower it goes back to smelling like gross, sweaty balls. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this? I'm not sexually active at this moment, but it's really bugging me and it's something I have become very aware off. I'm on the Nuvaring but I've been on it for almost a year and I dont think the two are related. Thx

Vicky,

It is likely that you have developed a condition called Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). This condition is caused by overgrowth of a bacteria called Gardnerella. It is not sex related or sexually transmitted.

Gardnerella is a normal bacteria of the vagina, but its growth is usually kept in check by another bacilli called lactobacilli. But, if the level of lactobacilli decreases due to any reason - if you had had flu or sore throat, if you have been taking any antibiotics or if you have been using any vaginal douches, etc. - then there is an overgrowth of Gardnerella causing bacterial vaginosis.

You will need to consult a doctor and ask for a presription for metronidazole (available as Flagyl). BV sometimes is very difficult to cure and you need to take certain precautions besides taking the antibiotic:

  • You must take at least at least 200 gms of yogurt daily to help growth of lactobacillus in the vagina.
  • Do not wear synthetic underwear.
  • Do not wear tight pants or pantyhoses.
  • Do not douche your vagina.
  • Wear loose cotton clothes to help any sweat in the genital regions to evaporate.
  • You will have to remove the Nuvaring after this month and not insert it again for at least 3 months to allow growth of the lactobacilli.

I hope this helps. Please free to ask a follow up question if you need more information.
