BREAST LUMPECTOMY AFTER DCIS - DO I NEED RADIATION I am 67 years of age and just had a breast lumpectomy for DCIS w/o lymph node involvement. I DO NOT want radiation or meds and have been researching the pros and cons of this treatment. There seems to be just as much con as pro. Please tell me what you think I cannot make up my mind Ann Woods,RH, Age: 67, SF REPLY Ann, How large was the area of DCIS? Was it in only one site or in more than 1 site? Was a lab test done to check for hormone receptors? FOLLOW-UP Hello The area of DCIS was 1 8.6mmx6mm by 7.7mm w/rim enhancement & 23% washout kinetics found by mri. When lumpectomy performed 2 other very small nests were removed as well. And yes, estrogen 95% I think. Thanks. REPLY Ann, I am afraid that you do need radiation as a follow up treatment after lumpectomy. This is because since you had the DCIS in more than one spot, it is likely that you could have microscopic areas in other parts of the breast too. Chemotherapy is not necessary since DCIS is not a cancer which invades other tissues. But you will need hormonal treatment to control the estrogen receptors. The standard treatment is with a drug called Tamoxifen which can suppress the Hormonal receptors in the breast. I hope this helps.
