ARE THESE EARLY LABOR PAINS? Doctor, I am 35 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I woke up yesterday with a bad back ache. Since then I have had lots of vaginal discomfort and last night I had one big painful contraction. I have not had any spotting or leakage of water. It does not seem as if my mucus plug has been expelled. Could this be a sign of early labor ? Tamara, 32 years, USA REPLY Tamara, Yes, this could be the beginnings of an early labor. Onset of labor is marked by three main signs of which only one or all may be present. These signs are painful uterine contraction, presence of bloody vaginal discharge (called show or mucus plug) and leakage of water from a ruptured amniotic sac. Pain from uterine muscle contractions frequently radiate to the back. The vaginal discomfort could be a symptom of descent of the baby's head deeper into the pelvis. Although you have not had any spotting or signs of expulsion of the mucus plug, this is the beginnings of labor. I hope this helps.
