STD Question - How Long Does It Take for Zithromax to Cure Chlamydia?

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR ZITHROMAX TO CURE CHLAMYDIA?

I went to the doctor 3 weeks ago and was diagnosed with Chylamydia. They gave me Doxycycline. I took it for one week and started developing a rash so I stopped taking it. I went back to the doctor and got tested for STD again. The next week the test for chlamydia came back positive still so they treated me with Zithromax and a dose of Flagyl. They are making me take Flagyl and Amoxycillin for two weeks. They are saying that I have PID because I have a pain in the abdomen. I am wondering if the Zithromax alone would cure it because I am really sick taking Flagyl and want to stop? How will I know if the Zithromax is working?

The drug of choice in the treatment of Chlamydia is Zithromax (Azithromycin). A single dose of Zithromax is enough to cure the disease.
But Zithromax alone cannot cure PID. PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) can be caused by a number of different organisms. So broad spectrum drugs like Amoxycillin and a drug like Flagyl for anerobic organisms is needed to control the infection.
Abdominal pain and vaginal discharge are commons symptoms of PID and that is why your doctor has prescribed Flagyl and Amoxycillin. Please continue to take the two drugs till you have completed the full course of treatment.
It is not necessary to test if you have been cured of Chlamydia by Zithromax unless you suspect that you have been reinfected again.
My suggestion is that you should not stop taking the Flagyl as it is being given for the PID, not Chlamydia.
