BREAST LUMP

I have had a breast lump type thing by my armpit since 2-08. It is longish like ropey not round I seem/think to have one on the other side of armpit as well but not as large. This lump seems to get larger and smaller each month. In addition, I also feel like here and there like some sort of like painless throbbing in areas of both my breast more so on the one breast that has the lump in armpit. The sensations come and go and have no consistent nature that I am aware of. I have had 2 ultrasounds a mammogram and an mri (w/o contrast). My mammo was good and so was my mri. Nothing bad was seen. Thank God for that. One Dr. (after ultrasound)said its an inflamed muscle the other Dr. (after another ultrasound) said it was a fat deposit. I would lovvve to know for sure what it is, instead of dont worry it is nothing of concern. Should I do another mri w/contrast? (i had refused contrast due to fear of complications from the blue dye). I have had 4 opinions all quite different except that there's nothing to worry about. Could you tell me what this lump could be? Or what these throbbing areas or twinges might be related too? Whats contracting in side my breasts? Sorry this is so long. THANK YOU!!!

JRH,

The round ropey lump which gets larger and smaller every month is probably the Axillary tail of Spence. This is normal breast tissue which is a continuation of the breast and may become more prominent if you have either gained weight or lost weight recently. It can also become more prominent around the time of the menstrual period, during pregnancy and around the time of the menopause due to hormonal imbalance.

The very tip of the tail of Spence reaches into the axilla and may be felt separate from the main mass.

The mammogram as well as ultrasound reports will not show anything abnormal.

The throbbing that you have may be either due to muscular contractions or due to increased blood flow through the breast as a result of the enlargement of the Axillary tail of Spence.

You can read about the anatomy of the breast here:

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to ask a follow-up question if you wish to know more.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTION

Thank you VERY MUCH. What you said makes sense. I was extremely impressed by you! Oh and thank you for the link. it was helpful. As for my mri results. I didn't completely get it other than it was a fatty deposit adajacent to breast capsule etc and that Everytihng was OK! That was my main concern that it should be nothing of concern!
