I WAS STRUCK BY A BLOW TO MY ABDOMEN IN EARLY PREGNANCY

Doctor,

Can a blow to the stomach in 6 weeks of pregnancy cause the baby to become deaf? I was nineteen when i got pregnant. And I was not married. My boyfriend asked me if he could punch me in the stomach so I would lose the baby. I was pretty scared so I said yes. He did punch me and I had very bad pains for 2 whole days. But nothing happened and I am so glad now that it did not work. My son is now 1 year old but deaf in both ears. I feel so guilty. Do you think that the punch in the early pregnancy caused his deafness. I feel terrible about it, to think that I caused his deafness.

Lisa,

No, a punch to the stomach at 6 weeks of pregnancy cannot affect the ears of the baby.

At 6 weeks of pregnancy, the uterus is still a pelvic organ - which means that the uterus is still within the shelter provided by the pelvic bones. It starts to become an abdominal organ only at 12 weeks. So at 12 weeks of pregnancy, the uterus may just be felt at the edge of the pelvic bone near the pubic hair.

A punch to the stomach at 6 weeks of pregnancy will not touch the uterus. If it is severe enough, it may cause a miscarriage, but it cannot hurt only the ears of the a baby.

The fetus is surrounded by water which acts as a cushion against any sudden movement. The fetal ears start to form only at around the 6th week of pregnancy and at 8 weeks is still too unformed to get damaged. So it is not possible for your baby's deafness to be due to the punch that you received when you were 6 weeks pregnant.

Please don't worry , you are not responsible for your baby's deafness.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to ask a follow-up question if you need further information.

Thank you so much, that really helps. I was feeling so guilty I could not sleep at night. Do you think I should tell him about the blow when he grows up? I don't really want to since it has not hurt him in any way.

No, I don't really think he needs to know anything about it. after all, it did not affect him and was not the cause of his deafness.
