I BLEED DURING SEX Doctor, I'm a 25 year old female. I have had bleeding during sex for the last week. I never had it before. The bleeding is not much. There is a little blood when I wipe after sex and a little spotting later. Then it clears up, until the next time I have sex. What could be the problem? Do you have any pain or vaginal itching? FOLLOW-UP The last week is the only time time that I had bleeding. But I do have some pain in the lower abdomen and a mild pain sometimes during sex. But there is no vaginal itching. And no, I am not on any birth control pill. My boyfriend uses the condom. Thanks. REPLY Brenda, The commonest causes of bleeding after sex at your age are: Cervical polyp- This is a small harmless growth at the mouth of the cervix which usually do not cause any problem. If it causes bleeding however, it needs to be removed. Cervical erosion- This condition can occur in women with high estrogen levels, for example, in women on birth control pills or women who are pregnant. The cells of the mouth of the cervix undergoes certain changes and can bleed. Since you are not on any birth control pills, it is unlikely that you are suffering from this condition. Cervical tumors - or growths - these are growths at the mouth of the cervix that usually occur in women after the age of 40 years. Vaginal infections - Inflamed vaginal walls can bleed and produce the pinkish discharge, especially after sex. Given that you also have symptoms of lower abdominal pain and pain when you have sex, the chances are that you have a vaginal infection. You need to be examined by your Obgyn.
